5 Effective Ways to Protect Your Premises Against COVID-19
The global pandemic that is COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has changed our everyday lives and has affected how businesses operate. One of the big questions for business owners whose business are deemed essential is, how do we protect our premises against COVID-19?
Keep Surfaces Clean
One simple way to protect your workplace and your employees from COVID-19 is by making sure that your premises are clean and hygienic. By cleaning surfaces like desks and tables as well as making sure you clean objects such as phones, keyboards, mouse’s etc. you are helping prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. This is something that may sound so obvious and it may be something that the majority of business do already but, everyone who touches an object or a surface contaminates it, and this is one of the main ways in which COVID-19 spreads.

Promote Regular and Thorough Hand-Washing
Another way to protect your business premises from COVID-19 is by insisting that employees, contractors and customers wash their hands regularly throughout the day. Even though they might not admit it, not everyone washes their hands as often as they should and this a major cause of the spread of bacteria.
When it comes to ensuring that your employees are keeping their hands clean, one thing you can do is putting sanitising hand rub dispensers in prominent places around the workplace.
Other things you can do is displaying posters that promotes hand-washing; to get these posters, all you need to do is ask your local health authority.
Make sure that your staff, customers and contractors have places where they have access to soap and water so that they can wash their hands.
Promote Good Respiratory Hygiene in The Workplace
COVID-19 is often transmitted on our breath, so making sure that your employees understand and have access to information on respiratory hygiene is important. Displaying posters promoting respiratory hygiene is an effective way to do this.
Communicating with your employees and offering them help and guidance about how to improve their respiratory hygiene will help keep your staff and their families safe.
Making sure your staff have access to the correct equipment like face masks and/or paper tissues along with closed bins to ensure that any used tissues or gloves can be disposed of safely.
If your members of staff require the use of public transport to get to and from work, advise them to consult national travel advice before making their way either to the workplace or before travelling on a business trip.
Also, as the message has been from the Government, if you and your employees have the ability to work from home, then you should work from home.
With how quickly COVID-19 is continuing to spread, if there is a confirmed case within your community, you should brief your employees that if they develop even a mild cough or low-grade fever (37.3 C or more), they should stay at home.
Also, if your any of your employees are on medication such as paracetamol/acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin, then they should also stay at home as the different medication listed can potentially mask symptoms of infection.
Encourage Social Distancing
Social distancing is another important way to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. As you no doubt already know, most businesses like food shops are enforcing social distancing between employees and customers. By staying a safe distance from another person, you will help prevent the spread of the virus, helping protect your staff, customers and their families.
One way you can encourage social distancing within your workplace is by placing markers on the ground indicating distances, this is particularly important in retail environments where queuing is more likely.
If your workers are able to work from home then they should, but if your workers need to be on the premises to do their job, then making sure that you only have the amount of staff necessary for those jobs to be carried out will help to enforce these social distancing rules.
Ensure Public Areas are Thoroughly Cleaned Regularly
Making sure that the larger areas of your premises remain clean can be tough at the best of times, but making sure that you regularly clean the larger areas of your premises, like car parks etc, can make a huge difference.
