Fire Fighting Water Bowsers

FIRE AND RESCUE VEHICLES

There are many forms of fire fighting vehicles in service with fire and rescue services across the world. Although fire fighters mainly use water tankers fitted to a lorry or fire engines in which hold combinations of equipment and smaller water tanks. There is often the requirement for the option of a water bowser on a trailer. A trailer water bowser is ideal for reaching locations in which a large fire engine / tankers may not be able to reach. Another great use of a fire fighting water bowser is to have it on site at events or in large manufacturing facilities to tackle fires immediately without the expensive cost of owning a fire engine.

Fire engines on average have a water tank that has the capacity between 1000 litres to 3000 litres and in some cases fire engines may be fitted with a water tank as small as 450 litres. The water tanks are usually in these medium sized capacity’s to save weight on a fire engine in order to maintain the lorries road handling ability’s. To keep the flow of water to fight an ongoing fire the fire engines water pump will then be connected to a fire hydrant or suck water from a near by lake or in some cases a swimming pool.

Fire fighting water bowsers have a choice of capacity’s including – 500 litres, 1125 litres and 2000 litres. These sizes of water tanks are ideal for fast delivery of essential water for tackling fires and reaching locations a large fire engine / tanker would not be able to. The operation of a fire fighting water bowser would be supply of water from the tank to a fire fighting water pump and when the water tank has run out the pump can then be changed to suck water from a near by lake, swimming pool or fire hydrant.

Similar operations to the heavy duty fire engine/tanker – Extra valves can be added upon requesting the fill and empty option on our firefighting water bowsers, however, this does contain an additional charge. FIRE FIGHTING WATER PUMPS

There are many forms of fire fighting water pumps on the market in which vary in volume, power and head (distance of which water is pushed), Along with the choice in engine and water pump. There is also choice between lay flat hose or solid hose. Lay flat hose is ideal for saving space however it can only be used on the outlet side of the pump where water is pushed through the hose, whereas solid hose can be used on both inlet or outlet sides of the water pump as it will not collapse as water is sucked from a water source through the hose.

The most common fire fighting water pump used on a water bowser is a petrol powered Honda WB20XT in which has a total head lift of 105ft and a suction head lift of 25ft. The discharge capacity of a Honda WB20XT is 164 US gallons (620.8 litres) per minute.

The WB20XT has a maximum pressure of 45 psi and the run time of 1.7 hours at maximum discharge. This water pump has a priming time of 110 seconds at 16.4ft. The inlet and outlet ports have a 2″ diameter giving you the option to have a 2″ hose. Smaller hoses are available on the outlet so you can have a self retracting hose reel as well as the option for lay flat hose. Multiple hose connections are available however please note by having multiple hoses the pressure of water will be reduced.

The WB20XT is powered by a petrol Honda GX120 engine fitted with Honda’s easy start and recoil start, this durable commercial grade engine provides ample power for the toughest conditions. There is a 4 vane high efficiency impeller for improved performance and the whole unit is secured in a heavy duty frame which protects the water pump and engine.

Although the WB20XT is a great machine for fighting fires, fire and rescue teams may require a water pump with even more power or volume. For fighting powerful fires, the LDA400 would be a good option to go for. The LDA400 uses a Kohler RY121 direct injection diesel engine 8.9 kW (12 hp) at 3,600 rpm single cylinder, pressure lubricated. This unit uses a electric start as standard and a hand pull emergency start. The inlet ports diameter is 4″ and the outlet port is 2″. This fire fighting water pump has a maximum output of 1,450 litres per minute and minimum of 400 litres per minute. This water pump has a fast priming time of 30 seconds at 3m (9.8ft).

Other pump and engine options are available upon request.

TRAILER OPTIONS FOR A FIRE FIGHTING WATER BOWSER

Water bowsers are available as both static and trailer units. The trailers offered for 500 litres, 1125 litres and 2000 litres water tanks are fully certified highway towable single axle and twin axle trailers. Site towable trailers are also available if the bowser is not going to be towed on the public highway.
