Diesel Exhaust Fluid or AdBlue is a urea solution made up of 32.5% urea and 67.5% of deionized water and is used in the modern diesel engine to reduce emissions.

When it meets the hot exhaust gases it releases Ammonia which is a catalyst to a chemical reaction that converts Nitrogen Oxide into two harmless chemicals Water vapor and Nitrogen.

With the demand for DEF/AdBlue increasing massively over the last couple of years so has the problems for storage, dispensing.

Trailer Engineering offer a full range of DEF/Ad blue storage solutions from 110 litre up to 2140 litre combating these problems.

AdBlue/DEF does not store well in direct sunlight as it crystalizes, the contents get stolen or contaminated and pumping equipment get stolen, it is also corrosive to steel.

Keeping the contents in a Polyethylene inner tank enclosed in lockable bund combat all of the above problems, keeping out of sunlight, keeping pumping equipment and contents secure.

Typically industrial and commercial Adblue tanks / bowsers are often bought in the capacity range from110 litres - 2140 litres. However there are also tanks and tankers that can go up to several thousand litres capacity of Adblue / DEF and not to forget the tubs of Adblue you can buy from the supermarket.

By having your own Adblue / DEF bowser you are making a more efficient choice in refilling your required machines that need Adblue by having a supply of diesel exhaust fluid on-site and to hand when in need of a fast refill of equipment. Another great advantage to owning your own on-site Adblue storage tank is that it is cheaper to buy Adblue / DEF in bulk and have it delivered via a tanker when you are using large amounts of Adblue.

There is a wide range of storage tanks for diesel exhaust fluid on the market. From universal bolt on tanks for a bowser to a static storage tank and even a mobile bowser.

But which type is best for you?

A static Adblue storage tank is ideal for leaving in a storage yard / depot and bringing your equipment to the tank when they require refilling. These static tanks can come in the form of a skid base bowser or even a cubicula design similar to a fuel cube, called a Adblue cube.

For smaller equipment refills a Bowset or Adblue caddy is an ideal type of storage dispensing tank. These wheelie bin styled tanks are easily manoeuvrable that can be wheeled up to the required equipment for refill duties. Typically an Adblue caddy would be fitted with a Adblue pump to dispense the DEF and are usually in the capacity of 110 litres.

There is also a universal Adblue dispensing tank that can be fitted onto a fuel bowser. This is a great product because if you already owned a fuel bowser before you required Adblue you can simply bolt this tank onto your current fuel bowser and making it possible for you to have a supply of both Adblue and diesel from one unit / tank. Typically this universal tank comes in a 120 litre capacity and can be fitted with an Adblue pump.

Adblue / DEF bowser's are a great Adblue tank for those larger machines and any site that requires multiple refills of Adblue whilst having the ability to be moved around the site to distribute Adblue to different machinery. They are also a great choice for Adblue distribution companies that require a unit to delivery to their customers.

Adblue Tanker's are usually used to distribute large amounts of bulk Adblue / DEF to various types of storage tanks. A tanker usually only delivers the Adblue to a storage tank in which then dispenses the Adblue to machinery.

Generally in most cases the consumption of Adblue / DEF to Diesel is around 6% to 8%. In other terms around 6 litres of Adblue is used for every 100 litres. So for a 1000 litre diesel tank around 60-80 litres of Adblue would be required.

Although storing Adblue in direct sunlight can cause crystallisation of Adblue, you are able to store Adblue outside as long as you have an Adblue tank that has been manufactured to protect the Adblue from the direct sunlight. Storage tanks that are able to protect your Adblue must either be a bunded tank or a tank that has been manufactured from a high grade polyethylene that can protect the contents from the U.V rays. Ideally it is recommended to store Adblue in a temperature range between 0 and 30°C.

Polyethylene Adblue / DEF storage tanks require minimal maintenance, However it is important to ensure the tank is kept clean and free from contamination. Any storage tank should be periodically inspected for any leaks or damage and any repairs that is needed should be rectified to ensure a clean storage facility for your Adblue.
